The agent of Ghanian midfielder Michael Essien says the 31-year-old could leave Chelsea in January.
Michael Essien could leave Chelsea this month, according to the midfielder’s agent.
The Ghanian spent last season on loan at Jose Mourinho’s Real Madrid but has made just three Premier League appearances since returning and was omitted from the Blues’ Champions League squad.
Essien joined Chelsea from Lyon in 2005 and went on to win two Premier League titles, four FA Cup and the Champions League.
But the player has suffered greatly with injuries and his chances at Stamford Bridge are set to be further limited by the return to fitness of summer signing Marco van Ginkel.
Essien’s agent Fabian Piveteau believes the player could leave Chelsea in the transfer window.
“He could leave Chelsea this winter,” Piveteau told French radio station RMC.
“Several major European clubs playing in the Champions League were informed and the situation should settle down within the next 10 days.
“You should know that Michael was not on the list of players who can play in the Champions League with Chelsea, so he is free to play in the competition with another club.”
But Piveteau rejected a return to Essien’s first club Bastia, insisting the 31-year-old would only play for mega-rich PSG or Lyon in France’s top flight.
He said: “In Ligue 1 he could play only at Paris Saint Germain or Lyon, but Bastia, FC Sochaux, for them to support the salary of a Chelsea player, it is already impossible.”
