The Blues had a bid in the region of £11m accepted by the Swiss champions for Salah last week, but there were concerns that Premier League rivals Liverpool might sneak in.
However, it seems that the west London club have fought off any rivals and will sign the 21-year-old in the very near future.
The winger – known as the ‘Egyptian Messi’ – will arrive at Stamford Bridge as a replacement in attacking midfield for Mata, who completed the £37.1m transfer to the Red Devils on Saturday.
Salah has been impressing in Switzerland since arriving at the club in the summer of 2012 and Mourinho got a first hand look at the African when facing Basel in the Champions League group stage this season.
This term the Egypt international has 10 goals and seven assists in 30 appearances in all competitions, including a strike against the Blues in Europe.
Brendan Rodgers also wanted to sign Salah and was prepared to make a £10m offer himself to bring the starlet to Anfield, but the lure of Chelsea was clearly too much to resist.
