Basel’s Schar has also attracted interest from Borussia Dortmund, Juventus and Manchester United.
The future of FC Basel defender Fabian Schar remains in the balance as Chelsea become the latest high profile club to join the chase for the youngster, according to Inside Futbol.
The 22-year-old has attracted interest from other Premier League sides such as Arsenal, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur in the past, as well as Borussia Dortmund, Inter Milan and Juventus.
Yet Blues manager Jose Mourinho was drawn in by the talents of Schar as the centre-back helped the Swiss champions to home and away victories over the west London club in the Champions League group stage.
Since arriving at Basel in the summer of 2012 the Switzerland international has grown in stature and is now an important part of the starting XI for both club and country.
Schar has five caps for the national team and impressively three goals, as well as having made 63 appearances in all competitions for the player’s club.
Mourinho meanwhile is preparing for life without David Luiz, as the Brazilian has been strongly linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge.
European giants Barcelona and Bayern Munich have both shown great interest in Luiz which may please the Portuguese boss, who does not rate the 26-year-old’s defensive capabilities.
It means that if the South American were sold there would be a position in central defence to fill and with Schar still being so young, the Swiss star could well be the ideal option.
