Chelsea look unlikely to be willing to meet Juventus’ £60 million asking price for Paul Pogba, with the Express reporting that this turn of events has led the Blues to Paris Saint Germain playmaker Javier Pastore.
The former Palermo man is reportedly available for £25m this summer after a lukewarm couple of years at the Parc des Princes, but Jose Mourinho may be confident that he can coax the Argentinian back to the form that saw him emerge as one of Europe’s most exciting players whilst at the Sicilian club.
The 25 year-old, who has 13 caps for Argentina, is primarily an attack-minded midfielder who would be likely to play behind the striker, but Mourinho may feel that his skill-set could be suited to dictating games from a deeper position, with the Blues appearing to be well-stocked for attacking midfield options.
Despite having the likes of Ramires, John Obi Mikel, Cesc Fabregas and Nemanja Matic to choose from in central midfield, Mourinho appears to be keen to add one more senior player to that area of his squad to cover for all eventualities.
It is not yet clear whether Mourinho intends to use Fabregas in an attacking or a more deep-lying role, with Pastore being a player who could theoretically perform similar roles to the Spaniard.
