Jose Mourinho is desperate to bring in a world-class forward this summer…
Chelsea will move for Borussia Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski if signing Wayne Rooney proves impossible, reports the Mirror
Chelsea are expected to test United’s resolve with a £40m bid for Rooney in the coming week, but the Red Devils remain adamant that they will not sell the forward.
The 27-year-old England man came off the bench in yesterday’s 4-1 away victory against Swansea, and set up two goals for Robin Van Persie and Danny Welbeck. Despite missing much of pre-season with various injuries, the England forward started England’s 3-2 friendly over Scotland last week, and s still desperate to leave Old Trafford.
The Stamford Bridge club will turn their attentions to Polish hitman Lewandowski if Rooney proves unattainable. The Dortmund forward has one year left on his contract at Dortmund, and is rumoured to be joining Bayern Munich next summer.
According to many, a deal is already sealed for Lewandowski to join the treble winners, but Chelsea will offer Dortmund a chance of receiving a fee for their star player. Lewandowski scored 36 in all competitions last term for the Champions League runners up, and is rightly regarded as one of the best strikers in Europe.
The 24-year-old will be available on a free transfer next summer however, so his fee would likely be half of the enormous £50m or £55m that French clubs have had to spend on Radamel Falcao and Edinson Cavani.
