Christian Atsu, one of a number of young players on the books at Chelsea but who are yet to make a senior appearance for the club, could be set for a loan spell with La Liga outfit Espanyol according to reports from Marca.
The 22 year-old has returned to Stamford Bridge off the back of an impressive World Cup campaign in which he was perhaps the Black Stars’ finest performer, despite a largely shambolic campaign for Ghana.
He signed for Chelsea twelve months ago from FC Porto, despite having made just a handful of appearances for the club after a loan spell at Rio Ave, and was immediately formed out to Vitesse Arnhem in the Eredivisie in a temporary spell.
Chelsea seem to feel that another spell in Holland may not be beneficial for Atsu’s development, however, with Premier League clubs such as West Ham United also having emerged as contenders for the player’s signature alongside Espanyol.
The biggest barrier to Espanyol bringing Atsu to Barcelona could be financial, with the La Liga club almost certain to have to cut a deal with the Blues regarding the percentage of the player’s wages that they would pay if they are able to convince him that their club is the best places for Atsu’s development.
