Blues boss Jose Mourinho was in attendance to watch the game, as after being banned from helping inspire his senior side against Stoke City at the weekend, as reported by the BBC, he opted to take in some of the action from the younger players.
Bertrand Traore also netted in the comprehensive victory, but it was Loftus-Cheek’s goal that undoubtedly caught the attention of many as he ran from the half-way line before slotting home to cap off an excellent individual performance.
The 19-year-old has made two Premier League appearances so far this season, and even started against Aston Villa in a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge last month only to be replaced at half-time.
Despite also playing for 77 minutes against Maccabi Tel Aviv in the Champions League, he wasn’t even included in the squad for the Stoke trip, but he ensured that he produced a timely reminder to Mourinho of what he is capable of.
The reigning Premier League champions are in 16th place in the standings, having collected just 11 points from 12 games so far this season.
Mourinho has watched on as they have suffered seven defeats already this year, and that has contributed to the fact that they are now 15 points adrift of league leaders Manchester City, and 13 points behind Manchester United who currently occupy the fourth and final Champions League qualification spot.
Whether or not the Portuguese tactician places greater faith in the younger players for the remainder of the campaign remains to be seen, but Loftus-Cheek certainly seems to be on the brink of breaking into the team. The question is if he can prove his talent at senior level and stay in the side moving forward.
