The former Real Madrid manager hit out at Gus Poyet’s side for having no interest in winning the game, and playing for the draw right from the off.
He is never afraid to play mind games, and what initially looked to be a compliment ended up as a veiled dig at his Premier League opponents.
“They defended a lot and they defended well. Defending a lot and well is not a crime. It is a strategy and it was successful for them,” he said.
“Only one team tried to win from the beginning, the other team didn’t.”
He then went on to suggest that the reason for the draw was his side’s involvement in the Champions League rather than Sunderland’s stalwart defending.
“It’s not easy to play here and not easy to play against a side which has had all week to prepare.”
