Can the two midfield stalwarts play together…?
Frank Lampard recently gave an in depth interview with FourFourTwo, where he discussed his relationship in the middle of the park with England’s skipper Steven Gerrard.
For many years, fans and pundits alike have asked whether the two compliment each other, and whether they can perform to the best of their ability alongside each other for England.
Here’s what 35-year-old midfielder Lampard had to say, when asked on his relationship with the Liverpool legend.
“I don’t agree with that [that we can’t play together], and you do get sick of it. It is a valid argument because of what we have done at our clubs, but I don’t think we are similar players. It has become a talking point that has bored us. As England we haven’t won anything for a long time, and so when we were in the same team there was a lot of expectation, which didn’t quite happen, so people do look at us in the midfield axis. I still think we can play together and can show that now,” Lampard said.
With his game time at Stamford Bridge currently restricted though, it remains to be seen whether Lampard will be considered a starter for England at this summer’s World Cup.
Gerrard though is playing excellent for club and country, and is likely to be the first name on the team sheet.
