The Cameroonian may not be coming due to the Blues’ one-year contract offer.
With the pursuit of Wayne Rooney seemingly going nowhere, Chelsea have looked into signing Anzhi Makhachkala striker Samuel Eto’o.
Returning Blues boss Jose Mourinho worked with the 32-year-old for a year whilst at Inter Milan, where in 2010 the pair won the treble of Serie A, Coppa Italia and the Champions League.
With Mourinho having concerns with the current strike force of Demba Ba, Romelu Lukaku and Fernando Torres at Stamford Bridge, the 50-year-old was lining up a move for the proven goal-scorer.
Eto’o is currently the highest paid player in world football with Anzhi shelling out £350,000-a-week for the former Barcelona ace, but owner Suleyman Kerimov wants to reduce the Russian side’s wage bill from £120m per-year to £50m and as a result, all the current players have been transfer-listed.
One such star has already arrived in west London, with Chelsea having signed Willian for £30m from the Russian rich boys.
The club’s owner Roman Abramovich has a working relationship with fellow oligarch Kerimov and all signs were pointing towards Eto’o coming to the Premier League as well.
However, the Cameroon international’s agent, Claudio Vigorelli, has revealed that negotiations with the Blues have not gone as smoothly as hoped.
“Chelsea has a clear corporate line to not offer long contracts to players over the age of 30,” Vigorelli told Il Giornali.
“I spoke with Jose, he was willing to give Samuel a one-year contract. But also Chelsea are waiting for Wayne Rooney and Mourinho only has him in mind.”
It now seems that Eto’o is more likely to return to former side Inter than make the switch to the Bridge, which means the club have made it all or nothing to land Rooney.
