The Blue Tigers teenagers beat Nepal in the final of the SAFF Championship in Kathmandu.
India captain Sunil Chetri says the success of the under-16 side in the South Asian Championship will act as motivation for the senior team.
Chetri was one of the first to congratulate the teenage Blue Tigers after the beat Nepal in the final on Tuesday believes it will spur him and his team-mates to replicate the feat in the same tournament next month.
“I am really happy for the boys. It’s a great feat. I would like to congratulate the entire Team and Support Staff,” Chetri quipped to the AIFF official website.
“It also acts as a motivation for us as we play the same Championship in another month’s time.”
AIFF President Prafus Pratel also released a short statement in which he praised the under-16’s for their efforts.
“The boys make us proud. Youth Development stays on the top of AIFF’s priority list and we would never compromise on it. It’s already started to yield results. I congratulate every member of the squad,” Mr. Patel said.
Indian National Team Coach Wim Koevermans also waded in with acclimation for the youth side, saying: “Well done boys. This is a huge moment in your career. You deserve it. Congratulations.”
