Rose tore the meniscus in his right knee for the second straight year earlier this week and is scheduled to have surgery in the next day or two before the team will release a timetable for his recovery.
The hope within the team is that their explosive point guard will be able to return this season, as depending on the extent of the damage and the procedure chosen by the surgeon, he could return sooner than many people expect.
“I think we’re all optimistic about it,” Butler told ESPN, when asked about the possibility of Rose returning this year.
“We want him back and I’m sure he’s going to try and get back as soon as possible.”
Bulls center Joakim Noah added that he was both angry and sad over the news as “he doesn’t deserve it”, but he remains confident that his teammate will be able to bounce back again and come back stronger.
While the Bulls await news on Rose’s likely recovery period, they will need to step up in his absence as they risk spiralling unless they improve on both offense and defense following their display in the loss to the Charlotte Hornets on Wednesday night.
Naturally, the emotional aspect of losing their star player would have hit the players hard, but coach Tom Thibodeau is no stranger to this situation having been through it the last three years and he knows that his players must react positively and get back to winning basketball games immediately.
