Chicago Bulls star Luol Deng has hailed Arsenal’s brilliant start to their Premier League and UEFA Champions League campaigns, but says a new striker is crucial if they are to maintain their assault on all fronts.
“I’ve watched a lot of games this season, and I’m really proud of the guys,” said the NBA small forward, who is an avid Gunners fan.
“I still think we need one more striker, but we’re in a good position for sure.
“The Premier League is so different this year though, normally having Manchester United so dominant as well as Chelsea, who are still up there.
“But now you have teams who can beat anyone, it’s random!
“Look at Southampton, when I watch them play it’s almost like a basketball press offence! They just chase every ball – a bunch of players all the same size hunting like a pack of wolves!
“It’s really exciting, but to win the league, and be as dominant as they used to be, I think Arsenal need one more striker.”
Olivier Giroud has proven a great focal point for the Gunners attack, but in his absence – whether through injury, suspension or simply squad rotation – the only like for like backup option would be Nicklas Bendtner, with Yaya Sanogo far from ready to lead the line.
Arsene Wenger’s other senior forwards Lukas Podolski and Theo Walcott do not possess the same work rate or physical strength, and the north London outfit could enter the transfer market in January.
