Clarke Carlisle has undergone surgery after suffering serious injuries in a collision with a lorry, says the Professional Footballers Association (PFA).
His wife Gemma revealed that the former Burnley, Queens Park Rangers and Leeds United defender is “very poorly” but “alive and stable”.
Clarke's very poorly but he's alive and stable. Best Christmas gift we as a family could wish for. Thanks again.

Carlisle became the Professional Players Association chairman in 2010 before stepping down in 2013.
The PFA released a short statement after representatives visited the 35-year-old in hospital.
“Everyone at the PFA is keeping Clarke Carlisle in their prayers and thoughts,” the PFA said.
“We visited Clarke at the hospital yesterday and we are offering our full help and support to him and his family at this difficult time.”
