The Indians will place Gomes on the 15-day disabled list as he looks to heal from his injury.
Gomes’ leg was banged up by Detroit Tigers outfielder Rajai Davis, who was sliding home while Gomes had his leg extended far out.
Losing Gomes will be a major blow to the Indians lineup as he broke out last season with 21 home runs and 74 runs batted in while leading catchers in batting average with .278.
“Losing Gomes, man, that can be a season-killer,” Indians manager Terry Francona said to ESPN.
Roberto Perez will start in place of Gomes for the Indians, and he will be tasked with guiding a young and promising pitching staff that Gomes handled well behind the plate.
The Indians are currently 2-3 and will look to put their slow start behind them and live up to the media hype.
