4. Ohio State
The fourth spot is sure to spark a fair share of controversy as Ohio State, TCU and Baylor all have compelling cases. However, the Buckeyes made the biggest statement of every contender with a 59-0 win over Wisconsin. They were counted out by many experts and fans since third-string quarterback Cardale Jones started in place of injured quarterback J.T. Barrett, who had led the Buckeyes to an 11-1 record and emerged as a legitimate Heisman candidate. The Buckeyes also held Wisconsin running back Melvin Gordon to 76 rushing yards even though he led the nation in rushing and was arguably the frontrunner for the Heisman. Winning against Michigan State helps Ohio State’s case too.
TCU and Baylor both had impressive wins of their own and have just one loss apiece, but their resumes will not be enough to stand out over Ohio State. The Big 12 lacking a championship game will likely hurt them as well although both champions have beaten Kansas State. Recency is sure to be a factor in the ranking committee’s minds as well, so Ohio State shining on the big stage will give them the slight edge. Giving Ohio State the No. 4 spot would also be an easy way out of the TCU-Baylor controversy.
