Per Mertesacker (Arsenal)
The German is often criticised for his lack of speed, but what he lacks in pace, the 28-year-old more than makes up for it in strength and positional play. After initially being derided on arriving in the Premier League, Mertesacker has now established himself as one of the better centre halves in the division and he just edges out teammate Laurent Koscielny and Chelsea duo John Terry and Gary Cahill.
David Luiz (Chelsea)
The stylish centre-half was a Barcelona target this summer but opted to stay under Jose Mourinho at Stamford Bridge. Since his move to Chelsea the Brazilian has been criticised for bombing forward rashly and making too mistakes but after his magnificent Confederations Cup displays, we reckon Luiz is a changed man and will only go from strength to strength under the Special One.
