Warwickshire v Derbyshire
Edgbaston
Close of play: Derbyshire 226 all-out, Warwickshire 14-0.
Derbyshire’s first return to the top flight since 2000 was marked by an impressive batting performance by tail-ender Tony Palldino.
The No.9 top-scored in the first innings with 68 as his side lost the toss and were put into bat by Warwickshire.
Without three first team bowlers – including England all-rounder Chris Woakes – the Bears left it to Jeetan Patel and Chris Wright to take the wickets with three apiece, Patel getting the prized scalp of West Indian batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul for 15.
It looked like it might be a dismal day for the Division One new boys but Palldino’s fine effort saved an embarrassment.
Warwickshire will resume day two on 14-0 at 11.00 BST today.
Yorkshire v Sussex
Headingley
Close of play: Yorkshire 96 all-out, Sussex 104-3.
It was a poor opening day for Yorkshire as Sussex won the toss, put the home side into bat and then proceeded to rip through their top order.
Only three batsmen made it into double figures for the home side, with England star Jonny Bairstow top-scoring with a modest 29.
The highlight of the day was Sussex all-rounder Chris Jordan’s outstanding debut, with bowling figures of 6-48 as Yorkshire were all-out for just 96.
Seamer Ryan Sidebottom tried to restore the order for the hosts by taking three Sussex wickets, but an aggressive 80 from opener Chris Nash ensured the away side are in control.
Sussex will look to build on 104-3 when they start day two at 11.00 BST today.
