Durham v Yorkshire
Chester-le-Street
Close of play: Durham 237, Yorkshire 177.
With the England selectors watching on ahead of the Ashes, Durham seamer Graham Onions staked his claim for a place with a five-wicket haul to help reduce Yorkshire to less than 200.
Rain interrupted much of the day in the north east but Onions made short work of the visiting batsmen when it resumed at 16.10 BST.
Three Lions duo Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow were two of the bowler’s victims as he finished with figures of 5-63.
Root ended up one short of his half-century when Onions removed his middle stump and the visitors’ tail-end did not fare much better as Ben Stokes joined the party with figures of 3-26.
Liam Plunkett’s 25 against his old club was the only real positive for Yorkshire as they have it all to do when Durham start their second innings today.
Surrey v Sussex
The Oval
Close of play: Surrey 351, Sussex 204-2.
Surrey added 50 runs to their overnight total with Gareth Batty and Chris Tremlett sharing a stand of 61, before Chris Jordan took the final three wickets to end with figures of 5-92.
In reply opener Chris Nash was dismissed early but Luke Wells came it at No.3 to hit an unbeaten 108 and leave Sussex looking strong going into day three.
Michael Yardy managed 23 before Wells and Ed Joyce shared a third wicket partnership of 104 at stumps on the second day.
Joyce also made it to his half-century as the away side continue to chase Surrey’s total.
Tim Linley and Batty took a wicket apiece for the hosts but if the partnership of Wells and Joyce can carry on as they are the home side could find themselves in trouble.
