Former rep player to add depth to Knights squad after playing in Italy and the UK.
Former Australia Test scrum-half Craig Gower has joined the Newcastle Knights for the remainder of the Australian National Rugby League season, the club said on Saturday.
Gower, 35, has been playing with the London Broncos in Britain after a spell in rugby union with Italy.
Gower played 238 games for the Penrith Panthers in the NRL, represented both New South Wales and Australia, before moving overseas.
“It will be wonderful to have someone with Craig’s experience join the Knights for the remainder of the year,” Newcastle chief executive Matt Gidley said.
“We have had a number of injuries this season and Craig can cover players like Danny (Buderus) and Kurt (Gidley).
“Craig is a renowned competitor and will provide confidence to our younger players.”
In World Cup year, Gower will also have the chance to test himself in the NRL under the coaching of Wayne Bennett prior to taking part in Italy’s World Cup campaign in England later this year.
Gower is expected to arrive in Australia early next week.
