India defeated Pakistan comfortably in Sunday’s Cricket World Cup clash in a match that stopped two nations – literally.
A Virat Kohli century guided India to a 76-run win over their biggest rivals in front of a packed Adelaide Oval crowd and a reported TV audience of 1.5 billion.
Two-thirds of the newly-revamped stands were dressed in the light blue of India as they cheered on Kohli to an impressive knock of 107 as India went on to make a tally of 300.
Pakistan started its innings strongly, but just when Misbah-ul-Haq and Shahid Afridi looked to be building a match-winning partnership the latter was dismissed for 22.
Ul-Haq was Pakistan’s standout following a knock of 76 under extreme pressure, but it wasn’t enough of his teammates crumbled with the bat.
According to AAP, 35,000 of the 47,000-strong crowd were international visitors, and the focus was as much on the atmosphere is at was on the contest itself.
Despite the ongoing tensions between both nations, there was no hint of malice both on and off the pitch.
The estimated TV audience of 1.5 billion is above even the likes of the 2014 FIFA World Cup final between Germany and Argentina, which had a reported global audience of 1 billion.
