The Proteas looked in big trouble at Seddon Park before a brilliant 138 not out by David Miller and JP Duminy’s 115 pushed them to a score of 4/399.
South Africa then restricted Zimbabwe to 277 to record a 62-run win in the Pool B clash.
De Villiers says he was happy with his side’s performance, but was understandably impressed with their much less-fancied opponents.
“I am very happy at the performance, we had a really good game today,” de Villiers was quoted by AAP.
“They (Zimbabwe) played some excellent cricket and I will not be surprised if they upset a couple of teams in this World Cup,” the Proteas captain instead.”
Zimbabwe will go in as favourites against the United Arab Emirates on Thursday, while the Proteas face a tough battle against India on Sunday.
