Sri Lanka head into the clash as massive underdogs, but the former spinner says he fully expects Angelo Mathews’ side to be a threat in the latter stages of the tournament.
“Once again Sri Lanka is set to be a threat at the business end of a major event,” Muralitharan wrote in a column on the ICC’s website.
“Sri Lanka have nothing to fear…the team now has a full week to rest up and prepare for the match against Australia while, for Michael Clarke’s side, it will be a third game in nine days.”
Australia go into the game off a record-breaking 275-run win over Afghanistan in Perth, however, its dramatic batting collapse against New Zealand will have come as a cause of concern.
Michael Clarke’s side lost 8-26 against the Black Caps at Eden Park on their way to a dramatic one-wicket loss.
