According to AFP, Gayle did not train with teammates at McLean Park in Napier on Wednesday, choosing to remain at the team hotel.
“We’d love him to play all the games but we’ll just have to manage him better,” coach Stuart Williams said.
West Indies have won just two of its five Pool B matches and need to defeat the UAE by a heavy margin to boost its net run-rate to have any chance of progressing to the quarter-finals.
The loss of Gayle would come as a huge loss after the veteran belted a World Cup record 215 against Zimbabwe two weeks ago.
The Pool B clash will take place at 10am (GMT) on Sunday.
