The Sharks fought back from a 4-0 defecit to grind out a 10-4 win.
It was a low-scoring encounter, with just two tries in the 80 minutes.
The Roosters got the break when Jack Bird grubbered to James Maloney and the half raced away 90 metres to score.
The Sharks should have had a try six minutes later but it was ruled out for obstruction. A tough call.
Both teams were making a lot of mistakes and the score remained 4-0 at half-time.
In the second half Cronulla hit the lead then Jeff Robson picked up a sloppy pass and put Luke Lewis in.
Chris Heighington got over the line but the try was chalked off for a double movement.
With 16 minutes to go Cronulla slotted a penalty and the score went to 8-4.
The Sharks added another penalty to extend their lead to six points. The Roosters pushed to find a winner but their execution was poor.
