Crystal Palace are closing in on a surprising move for Tottenham midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson, who is free to leave White Hart Lane this summer.
The Daily Mirror are reporting that the Icelander, who made just 14 starts for Spurs last season, has been the subject of an £8m bid from Tony Pulis’ side, which has in turn been accepted by the North London club.
Should the deal go through, the fee would almost double Palace’s previous transfer record – currently held by the £4.5m they paid Peterborough for Dwight Gayle last summer.
Sigurdsson had been linked with a move to Swansea City, where he enjoyed a successful loan spell during 2012 – with Spurs rumoured to be interested in using him as part of a deal for full-back Ben Davies or goalkeeper Michel Vorm.
Swansea have already signed Lukasz Fabianski from Arsenal so are prepared for Vorm to leave, but are standing firm over their £10m valuation of young full-back Davies, allowing Palace the chance to swoop for Sigurdsson.
The 24-year-old has scored 13 goals in 85 appearances during two seasons with Tottenham, while he also netted seven Premier League goals during half-a-season with Swansea. His threat from set pieces and goals from midfield would no doubt be enthusiastically greeted at Selhurst Park.
