That volley made it 2-0 to the Reds, building on James Milner’s early opener, which came after just 50 seconds.
However, with the pressure building on Brendan Rodgers following a string of disappointing results, the hosts were unable to hold on to their two-goal lead for long as Rudy Gestede struck for the visitors.
Sturridge found the net again shortly after to restore Liverpool’s two-goal cushion, but it was a case of deja-vu as Gestede bagged his second of the game to set up a nervous finish to the match.
It ended 3-2 to the Reds.
The result will please Rodgers, but he will be especially delighted to see Sturridge back amongst the goals because the 26-year-old has been a significant absentee for the club so far this season.
