Garcia (29-0, 17 KOs) will hope to put on a stylish performance on Saturday night, but while he insists that he can mix it in terms of skill with his opponent, he knows that he has the power to end the bout if he lands.
In contrast, Peterson (33-2-1, 17 KOs) has tasted defeat previously and received news this week that if he loses to Garcia, he will be stripped of his IBF junior welterweight title.
For whatever reason, this fight is being contested at a catch-weight of 143-pounds, and so Garcia’s WBA and WBC junior welterweight titles are not on the line. However, president of the IBF, Daryl Peoples, confirmed that their title will be vacated if Peterson loses.
Peoples went on to explain that Peterson was due a mandatory defense and had requested an exemption, but once this fight was made over the 140-pound limit, it no longer became a unification bout and so the decision was made to hand the next two contenders the chance to win the strap.
Nevertheless, Garcia isn’t concerned by all that and insists that he will match Peterson for skill as he has proven with his unbeaten record so far that he is a smart boxer and can mix it with the best.
However, he wants to entertain the fans on Saturday and that means landing some big shots on Peterson’s chin to see if he can stand up to his power.
“I’ve faced a lot of skillful boxers in my career and I’m still undefeated. That should tell the fans around the world who has more skill. Come April 11 when he’s feeling these two bombs on his face he’s going to forget about his skill,” Garcia said, FightHype reports.
“I just want to give fans a great fight. I’m not too worried about the ‘0’ on my record. I fight hard to protect it but my main focus is to go in there and get the job done one fight at a time.”
The pair will meet on a card that also features the WBO middleweight title clash between Andy Lee and Peter Quillin.
