Beckham was included by Glenn Hoddle in his 23-man England squad to travel to the 1998 World Cup in France.

Hoddle publicly criticised the then United player for not concentrating on the tournament and he was not picked for the first two group matches.

However, the manager was made to eat his words when upon selecting Beckham in the Three Lions’ third game, the midfielder scored what was to become a trademark free-kick against Colombia.
