Argentina revenge
By the time the 2002 World Cup in South Korea and Japan came along Beckham was recognised as a firm England favourite and good choice as captain.
A twist of fate drew Argentina in the Three Lions’ group, four years after the skipper’s red card against them, and after the side were awarded a penalty only one man was going to take it.
Beckham’s strike secured a 0-1 win for England and helped eliminate the Argentinians. Revenge is sweet.
