Real Madrid tabled an initial bid of just £11.4m for David de Gea, according to reports.
The La Liga giants and Manchester United eventually agreed a £29m deal on Monday that would see the Spanish international make the move the Bernabeu, with Keylor Navas heading in the opposite direction to Old Trafford.
Despite the two clubs agreeing a deal, the transfer collapsed after required paperwork had failed to be submitted by the European transfer deadline on Monday night.
De Gea now looks set to join Real Madrid in a free transfer next summer, however, a Manchester United club insider told Daily Star that the Spanish heavyweights had offered a measly £11.4m for the 24-year-old.
“The opening bid was £11.4m before negotiations eventually saw the two clubs agree on a fee of £29m, including Real goalkeeper Keylor Navas,” the United insider said.
De Gea has not featured in any of United’s matches this season, with Louis van Gaal preferring to use Sergio Romero in between the sticks with transfer speculation over De Gea’s future dragging on into the season.
