Haye not impressed with previous comments and doubts Fury’s fanbase.
British heavyweight boxing star David Haye has insisted that he doesn’t have much sympathy for rival Tyson Fury after Dereck Chisora pulled out of their fight.
Haye withdrew from fights against Fury twice with injuries, and with Chisora now unavailable for this Saturday’s scheduled bout due to a fractured hand, Fury faces another frustrating wait to secure an encounter with Wladimir Klitschko.
While the controversial and foul-mouthed star will face Alexander Ustinov in Manchester this weekend, it is unclear at this stage as to whether or not he will face Chisora at a later date or if he will follow a different path to get to the world champion.
Meanwhile, Haye has revealed that he is glad in some ways that Fury faces another spell on the outside looking in after he claimed that he wasn’t in boxing for the glory or titles but merely to make money.
“Not really,” said Haye, as reported by Boxing News Online.
“He’s given me so much stick. I felt bad for him in that the fight was postponed but since then I’ve heard his comments about me and my gut instinct is he doesn’t deserve to be a millionaire.
“What I found quite amusing was the fact that he thinks he is this big time superstar and the only reason anyone knows him is he was linked to fighting me a couple of times. He thought he made it and he could make millions from ticket sales, maybe Chisora thought the same after we sold 35,000 in Upton Park, but with them together, and even with an undercard of ticket-sellers, they hadn’t sold that many. That’s what amazed me. Neither of them have very big fanbases.”
Haye also insists that if Fury was serious about making a fight with Klitschko, then he should have travelled to face Kubrat Pulev in order to become the mandatory challenger months ago.
That would have ultimately put Fury in a powerful position also in dictating terms for future fights, but it appears as though that opportunity has passed for now and it remains to be seen whether or not Haye will make his comeback later this year with a view of facing Fury in the near future.
