The England international was one of several players cleared out in a squad overhaul by Louis van Gaal this summer, with the Dutchman not deeming him good enough for the team as he signed Radamel Falcao from AS Monaco.
Moyes is surprised, however, saying that Welbeck was an important player in his team and an impressive product of the club’s youth academy.
“Danny Welbeck was great for us at Manchester United,” the Scot said.
“We played him in nearly all the big games and, more importantly, [he was] one of your own boys you bring through.
“It was a bit of a surprise for me [that he was sold to Arsenal].”
