Left back was previously with Montreal Impact.
DC United have announced the signing of Swiss left-back Dennis Iapichino. Montreal Impact announced on Tuesday that they had waived Iapichino’s contract in order to provide further opportunities for Montreal’s Homegrowns. Iapichino, 23, had played 1,152 minutes in 16 games for the impact since joining the club on July 11, 2012, maintaining a 9-5-2 record (7-4-1 as a starter).
“He’s a good kid,” sporting director Nick De Santis said of Iapichino – but Montreal decided to make the move so the player had sufficient time to find another team and the Impact had more leeway to give playing time to Homegrowns as MLS and CONCACAF Champions League fixtures pile up.
Prior to joining the Impact, Iapichino featured for FC Lugano (Switzerland) from 2010-12, playing 45 regular-season matches and four Swiss Cup games in total. From 2009-10, the defender did a loan spell with F.C. Biel-Bienne (Switzerland) of the Challenge League, where he appeared in 12 matches. The Switzerland native began his career in 2008 with Swiss powerhouse FC Basel, featuring in 29 games with the side’s U-21 team and tallying one goal. On the international level, Iapichino has participated in six friendlies with the Swiss U-20 National Team, all in 2010.
Iapichino’s first game for his new club could well be against his previous employers, as DC United travel to Montreal on Saturday.
