The Red Devils snapped up Valdes on a free transfer amid rumours that de Gea is a top target for Real Madrid, and these rumours may have strengthened now after van Gaal admitted his new signing would not be happy to play as a backup.
“Nobody is happy to be number two and Victor has to have ambition to beat David De Gea – but it shall be very hard for him,” the Dutchman explained.
Asked about whether de Gea would stay with United, van Gaal could not give an entirely confident answer, saying: “I think so, yes. There is no problem for him to sign.”
