Paris Saint-Germain’s Lucas Digne is expected to turn down Liverpool in favour of a move to Roma.
The French left-back is second-choice to Maxwell at the Ligue 1 title holders and wants to leave in order to play regular football ahead of the European Championships next summer.
Liverpool had been credited with an interest in the 22-year-old, with Brendan Rodgers exploring his left-back options as speculation persists over the futures of Jose Enrique and Alberto Moreno. Eighteen-year-old Joe Gomez started the opening-weekend win over Stoke City, but is primarily a centre-back.
However, ESPN reports that Roma, whose manager Rudi Garcia worked with Digne during his time in charge of Lille, are in pole position to sign the player on an initial season-long loan deal.
That would spell bad news for Ashley Cole. The former Arsenal and Chelsea defender made only 11 Serie A appearances for Roma last season and would suffer further from Digne’s arrival.
The England international centurion has recently been tipped for a move to the MLS.
