The St. Louis Rams released defensive end Michael Sam as they slimmed their roster to 53 players, and the rookie expressed his gratitude for the opportunity on Twitter.
Defensive end Michael Sam, who was selected in the seventh round of the draft by the St. Louis Rams, was released in a somewhat shocking move.
This may be controversial to some fans since he finished with a team-leading three sacks in the preseason, but the Rams have a logjam at defensive end that ultimately led to Sam’s release.
Sam was the first openly gay player to be selected in the NFL draft, and his performance in the preseason will likely be enough for a team to claim him off waivers.
Here are a few tweets from the defensive end on his verified account expressing his thoughts on his release.
I want to thank the entire Rams organization and the city of St. Louis for giving me this tremendous opportunity and allowing me to (1/2)
