Aston Villa need Christian Benteke to have any chance of making noise in the Premier League next season. Can the Villans keep their prized striker?
Aston Villa manager Tim Sherwood remains confident that the club will be able to retain superstar striker Christian Benteke.
According to Sky Sports, the Villa Park boss – who reportedly made a cash bet with a reporter that his 24-year-old Belgian striker stays with Aston Villa – still thinks that Christian Benteke will stay with the club even though Liverpool recently gained a massive amount of spending money on the £49 million sale of Raheem Sterling to Man City.
“I think he stays,” Sherwood told Sky Sports News HQ. “I think Liverpool – I looked the other day – have six or seven strikers at the club. Now I’m not sure how many they actually need. We know Christian is a very good player and we want to keep hold of him.
“If someone matches that buy-out clause there is nothing we can do about it but until that happens he is an Aston Villa player and we are all very pleased about that.”
Benteke recorded 11 goals in his last 10 league games with Aston Villa to help the club escape relegation. He was the Premier League Player of the Month in April and was a huge part of the team’s run to the FA Cup Final. Benteke has scored double-digit league goals in each of the last four years and in five of the last six.
