Italian legend is set to be deployed as a lone striker by head coach Frank Farina
Sydney FC head coach Frank Farina has revealed that Alessandro Del Piero will be lead the Sky Blues attack next season.
The 38-year-old Italian legend spent much of his debut campaign in the A-League playing in the number 10 role he used to occupy at Juventus but still managed to find the back of the net 14 times in a team that finished outside of the top-six.
However, he is set to be deployed as the central striker in a three-pronged attack in the new term by Farina, who hopes that reducing Del Piero’s defensive duties will lead to more goals from his marquee player.
”Alessandro is most dangerous in the final third. That’s where he creates and where he scores goals,” Farina told the Sydney Morning Herald.
”There’s no point having Alessandro picking the ball up 10 metres into our own half where he’s not going to be able to do what he does best.
”Hopefully in that role, when we win possession of the ball we can get the ball to him and others in areas we create. That’s been his greatest gift throughout his career.”
Sydney are still waiting on Del Piero’s return to pre-season training after he joined them for a friendly match in Japan against J-League club Sagan Tosu, in which he played 70 minutes before being substituted.
