Liverpool have missed out on the Champions League for the last few seasons, so being back among Europe’s elite this year holds so much more meaning to the players and fans.
With one game remaining in Group A however, they will be battling for their survival against FC Basel on Tuesday when the Swiss side head to Anfield.
With just one win and a total of four points after five games, they have not had the successful return to the competition they might have hoped; made worse by the fact that they were expected to sail through comfortably in a group consisting of Basel and Ludogorets Razgrad. A win over Basel would see them through however, with the end result all that really matters in this case.
Rodgers believes that needing a win at Anfield in the final game is “perfect” though, and is looking forward to the crunch match against their European rivals.
“We will get great support and there will be energy,” he said.
“For us, we could not have wanted any more than to go to Anfield on Tuesday night needing to win the game to get qualified. It’s perfect.”
