With DT Nick Fairley struggling on and off the field, All-Pro Ndamukong Suh could have a harder time being effective in 2014.
Lions DT Nick Fairley is struggling to maintain his playing weight, which could lead to a diminished role in 2014 and his possible release by the team at the end of the season.
After reporting to OTAs in June more than 25 pounds underweight, Fairley reportedly gained 10 pounds and is now uncomfortably over his playing weight. The Lions demoted Fairley this past week in favor of veteran DT C.J. Mosley, and Fairley’s overall role with the team could be in serious jeopardy.
Fairley has also had legal problems in the past two years: a conviction for DUI and reckless driving along with an arrest for marijuana possession in 2012 have him currently serving probation.
The Lions drafted Fairley 13th overall in 2011. In 2013, Fairley recorded a career high 6.0 sacks as well as a fumble returned for a TD and a safety. However, the Lions chose not to exercise the 5th-year option on his contract, which means the Lions may choose to release him at the end of the season instead of negotiating for a new contract.
