The 36-year-old hit 32 home runs and drove in 103 runs with a .335 batting average and finished in second place in American League MVP voting behind Los Angeles Angels outfielder Mike Trout.
However, Martinez’s age is showing as he injured his knee during the offseason. This will require him to go through offseason surgery, and it may force him to sit out for the beginning of the regular season.
Martinez is signed through 2018 with the Tigers after signing a four-year, $68 million contract extension.
MLB revealed the severity of Martinez’s injury and announced his surgery on Twitter.
