The manager says that the Argentine was the better to keep at the Bernabeu.
Several Arsenal fans may strongly disagree, but Real Madrid head coach Carlo Ancelotti says that Angel Di Maria is more important to the team than Mesut Ozil ever was.
Madrid sold Ozil to the Gunners on transfer deadline day for £42.4m, much to the bemusement of many within the game – most notably Los Blancos superstar Cristiano Ronaldo.
The German has been an instant hit at the Emirates Stadium, but over in Spain Di Maria is the one who has stepped up to fill the gap despite the expensive purchases of Gareth Bale and Isco.
Now Ancelotti has said that the Argentina international is a more vital part of the Madrid team than Ozil was during the three years the attacking midfielder spent in the Spanish capital.
“It was a technical decision [to sell Ozil],” the Italian was quoted by Goal.
“I prefer Di Maria for the balance of the team.
“He has less quality than Ozil but, for his character and the way he helps the team, I wanted him.
“With the arrival of Bale I thought it was more important to have Di Maria than Ozil.”
Considering the 25-year-old provided more assists than any other player in Europe during those three years in Madrid this is a big call from Ancelotti.
However, there is also no denying that Di Maria appears to have stepped up the South American’s game this season, knowing that competition is going to be fierce.
Six assists and three goals for the winger is a great return and is exactly the same return that Ozil has managed since moving to north London.
