One of the more controversial players in the NFL in light of the numerous scandals that ravaged the league early in the 2014 season, Hardy would provide either the Cowboys or the Buccaneers with a major shot in the arm as a pass rusher.
Hardy was arrested for domestic violence against his former girlfriend before the 2014 season and was placed on the Commissioner’s Exempt list after Week One following a guilty verdict handed down by a judge in a Carolina court – receiving his $13.1 million contract from the Panthers fully guaranteed despite missing 15 games. But Hardy appealed the verdict and took the case to a jury trial, where the charges were later dismissed because his accuser went shopping instead of showing up to give her testimony.
From 2012 to 2013, Hardy recorded 26.0 sacks and made the Pro Bowl in 2013 after a 15.0 sack season. The Panthers chose to give Hardy a one-year franchise tag instead of signing him to a long-term contract.
