Hayne will referee the Storm-Raiders clash this weekend despite poor performances.
NRL referee Shayne Hayne has been retained for this weekend’s Round 19 clash between Melbourne and Canberra despite coming under more criticism for his performances of late.
The NRL confirmed on Tuesday that Hayne will referee Saturday’s match between the Storm and Raiders at AAMI Park as part of the Rise For Alex round, alongside Chris Butler.
Hayne was heavily criticised after he failed to refer a possible early try to Wests Tigers winger David Nofoaluma during the Tigers’ 40-8 loss to Manly at Brookvale Oval.
Replays showed Nofoaluma scored a legitimate try, however Hayne refused to refer to decision to the video referees, instead calling that the ball dropped short of the line and awarded a scrum-feed to Manly.
A clearly angry Wests Tigers captain Robbie Farah unleashed on Hayne in a post-match interview, calling the whistleblower “disrespectful” and “arrogant”.
However, it does appear the NRL are beginning to lose patience with Hayne, with referee’s boss Tony Archer assigned to the ‘higher profile’ matches this weekend.
