Newcastle Knights release centre Joey Leilua, Canberra Raiders move likely
The Raiders confirmed the move on Wednesday, two days after he was granted an early release by the Knights.
Leilua said he was thankful for the opportunity presented to him by the Raiders and that he was excited to begin training with his new teammates.
“It’s a new opportunity for me and I’m really excited about joining the Raiders,” Leilua said in a Raiders statement.
“I know a few of the players like Sia Soliola and Frank-Paul Nuuausala and they speak highly of the club and (coach) Ricky Stuart so I can’t wait to get out there with the boys.”
Raiders chief executive Don Furner said the club was hopeful of signing Leilua on a long-term deal in the coming days.
“Joseph is a very talented player who will look to make an impact with the Raiders,” he said.
“He’s another player we’ve recruited which helps us to continue to build a great playing roster.”
Leilua was contracted to the Knights until 2016, but triggered a clause in his contract which allowed him to leave the club should Wayne Bennett exit Newcastle.
