The Blue Birds sign Cornelius from Copenhagen.
Cardiff City have secured their first summer signing upon being promoted to the Premier League with a club record £7.5m deal for FC Copenhagen striker Andreas Cornelius.
“FC Copenhagen have today come to an agreement with Cardiff City for the sale of Andreas Cornelius,” read a statement on the Danish club’s website.
The move will give confidence to Cardiff fans as it shows the Welsh side’s intent in the English top tier this season and that they are willing to allow manager Malky Mackay to spend big.
Cornelius is a product of the Copenhagen youth system and last season impressed in Denmark with his ability in front of goal.
In another championship winning campaign for the club the 20-year-old netted 18 goals in 32 Superligaen appearances, as well as gaining vital European experience in both the Champions League and Europa League.
The performances from the young Dane have also won him several call-ups to the senior national team as they try and qualify from a difficult group that also includes Italy and Bulgaria.
Cornelius has earned seven caps for Denmark to date and has netted just the one goal.
The striker will now join the likes of Fraizer Campbell and Craig Bellamy in the Blue Birds attack as Cardiff bid to avoid relegation from the Premier League.
The club have some significant financial backing and the supporters will be hoping that Cornelius is just the first of several top signings that Mackay makes during the summer transfer window.
