Chelsea have signed one of the stars of the 2015 Women’s World Cup by recruiting Fran Kirby from Reading.
England striker Kirby, who was dubbed “mini Messi” by Lionesses head coach Mark Sampson, has put pen to paper on a three-and-a-half-year contract with the London club.
The 22-year-old scored England’s first goal at the World Cup, finding the net in a 2-1 win over Mexico.
She enjoyed fine form at club level last season, bagging 24 goals for Reading – making her the leading scorer in WSL 2.
Kirby is quoted by The Express as saying: “Chelsea is one of the best clubs in the world and now is a really good time for me to step up in my career.
“It’s pretty incredible for me. The last couple of months have been a bit of a whirlwind and moving here is the cherry on top.”
