Manchester United have completed their fifth major signing of the summer in the shape of Daley Blind from Ajax, with the Dutchman costing £13.8m.
Blind reunites with boss Louis van Gaal at Old Trafford, having been managed by the 63-year-old for two years when he was in charge of the Netherlands national team.
The 24-year-old joins Angel di Maria, Ander Herrera, Marcos Rojo and Luke Shaw on the list of new arrivals and takes the club’s spending for the summer to £145.5m.
Blind is an extremely versatile player who could operate in a variety of roles for the Red Devils, although is likely to be drafted in as a central midfielder to compliment the more attacking nature of di Maria and Herrera.
The 2014 Dutch Footballer of the Year can also play as a left-back and central defender, as seen by his strong performances in both roles at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
Blind will now be tasked with trying to improve United’s fortunes under van Gaal’s guidance, with the club having failed to win any of their four matches in 2014/15 so far.
The defensively minded player is a product of the youth system at the Amsterdam ArenA, breaking into the first team in 2009 and making 143 appearances in all competitions and winning four Eredivisie titles since.
