After weeks of speculation Manchester United have finally completed the signing of Real Madrid midfielder Angel di Maria for a British record transfer fee of £59.7m.
The 26-year-old’s price beats that of previous holder Fernando Torres, who joined Chelsea from Liverpool in January 2011.
Di Maria becomes the Red Devils’ fourth major signing of the summer along with Ander Herrera, Luke Shaw and Marcos Rojo and takes their spending to a whopping £131.7m.
The Argentina international has signed a five-year deal with the club and will represent a marquee signing for new manager Louis van Gaal.
Things haven’t started that promisingly so far under the Dutchman with just one point from their first two Premier League games with Swansea City and Sunderland.
However, di Maria will be expected to help change those fortunes having experienced great success during his four years with Madrid.
Los Blancos signed the South American in the summer of 2010 from Benfica for a fee of around £32m and the midfield ace has since played 190 games in all competitions.
During that time di Maria helped the Spanish giants to two Copa del Rey trophies, La Liga and the Champions League title earlier this year.
The Argentine was also key in his nation’s march to the final of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil where they were eventually beaten by Germany.
